Not knowing how to catch a Leprechaun.

Not knowing how to catch a Leprechaun.

Let me tell you about the time when my son was 3 years old (and learning to speak English). He came very excited from school one day, asking me if I could help him build a trap to catch a ‘le-precon’. He explained to me that the ‘le-precon’ would come at night, and it was very important to catch it.

A million questions started coming to my mind: Was a ‘le-precon’ an insect? A kind of mouse? Another kind of small animal? Did he see it inside the house? 😨 Was it dangerous? 😱

It took me around 3 hours to figure out what he was trying to say, and 2 more hours to get to the correct spelling of Leprechaun! – He wanted to catch a L-E-P-R-E-C-H-A-U-N for St. Patricks day! 😅

St. Patricks day was celebrated last March in the US based in Irish tradition. This year’s celebration at my daughter’s school, brought back to my memory this story of my first St. Patrick’s Day as a Mexican mom in the US.

If by any chance you are as clueless as I was about what a Leprechaun is, here’s the definition from my always loyal friends: Google and Wikipedia. “A leprechaun  is a diminutive supernatural being in Irish folklore. They are usually depicted as little bearded men, wearing a coat and hat, who partake in mischief. In later times, they have been depicted as shoe-makers who have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.” – My understanding at the moment is that if you catch a Leprechaun, you can keep his pot of gold.

I’m sad to report that up to this point, we haven’t had any luck with that pot of gold yet, but we’ll keep trying! 😜
